  1. Kesa Uchi :: (jyunte) Absorb back, no step, counter strike kesa.
  2. Kesa Uchi :: (jyunte) Step back as you absorb, slide/step in to counterstrike with kesa.

    Variation #1
    Step off with back foot; change right hand to base of jo and block with downward strike from above, keeping tip of jo higher than base, draw and tsuki.
    Variation #2
    No hand change, bring tip of jo straight up, turn center towards uke, bring jo down keeping tip higher than, base, tsuki.
  7. Kaiten Uchiotoshi :: (gyakute) Same as #6 var #2, only flip jo after block and tsuki
  8. Kaiten Uchiotoshi :: (gyakute) Step back with left foot, draw hands to base of jo, flip the jo, strike downards and thrust tsuki.
  9. Otoshi tsuki :: (jyunte) Vertical block to protect head, direct counterstrike from overhead (bayonet thrust).
  10. Otoshi tsuki :: (jyunte) Vertical block; indirect; slide down jo and strike-thrust overhead
  11. Otoshi tsuki :: (gyakute) Step back, with left foot, slide hands to base of jo, vertical block and slide down jo, direct overhead thrust.
  12. Otoshi tsuki :: (jyunte) Gedan (uke strikes to knee), vertical block, slide up jo and thrust from overhead.

2. Tsuki Defenses

  1. Choku Tsuki :: (jyunte) Step off line slightly, thrust directory for solar plexus.
  2. Kaeshi tsuki :: (gyakute) Step off the line slightly, thrust directly for the solar plexus, do not slide hand down jo.
  3. Haraizuki :: (jyunte) Step off with back foot, tip up block/strike to hand on attacking jo, spiral thrust to solar plexus.

  5. Kaeshi uchiotoshi :: (gyakute) Step off with back foot, grasp base of jo with right hand, block/strike downwards keeping the base of the jo lower than the tip, tsuki.
  6. Kaeshi uchiotoshi :: (gyakute) Step off with back foot and bring tip of jo straight up, strike downwards keeping tip high, tsuki.
  7. Makiuchiotoshi :: (jyunte)
    Variation #1
    Step off slightly with back foot, block by drawing jo back along attacking jo, shomen strike jo, slide forward and tsuki.
    Variation #2
    Step back with left foot and absorb back, change hands overhead and shomen strike the jo, tsuki.

  9. Otoshi tsuki :: (jyunte) Step off slightly with back foot, slide up attacking jo and counter with overhead thrust, (cf - #12 of Kesa defenses)
  10. Otoshi tsuki :: (jyunte) Step across and in with front foot, twist hips and draw rear foot up, thrust to throat with top of jo.
  11. Kaiten uchiotoshi :: (jyunte)
    Variation #1
    Step off with back foot, block downwards with tip of jo, flip jo and counter tsuki.
    Variation #2
    Step back with front foot, slide hands to other end of jo, block tsuki downwards, flip jo, tsuki.
  12. Katate Uchi :: (jyunte) Absorb and step back, counter with one handed Kesa, (Uke protects head with vertical block.)

3. Shomen Defenses

  1. Shomen nagashiuchi :: (jyunte) Block/Absorb strike as you step off with back foot at a 45 degree ange. Slide front foot back and then forward again as you counter with shomen.
  2. Kaeshi harai uchiotoshi :: (gyakute) Slide directly in; knock attacking jo to side and thrust directly.
  3. Kaeshi tsuki :: (gyakute) same as #2 tsuki defense, spiral directly in.
  4. Makiotoshi :: (jyunte) Indirect
  5. Makiotoshi :: (jyunte) Direct
  6. Jyumongi suriotoshi :: Variation #1 Step to side with back foot so that feet are parallel; block with lateral overhad block. Release jo with right hand and slide jo down attackers jo as you sweep left foot in front of right. Grasp base of jo with right hand and tsuki.
  7. Jyumongi Suriotoshi :: Variation #2 Feet remain in hamni; block with overhead lateral block, flatten left hand on jo and slide down partner's jo; finish with direct thrust to throat. (Left hand remains flat on top of jo; no draw and thrust.
  8. Otoshi tsuki :: (jyunte) Horizontal overhead block, slide up partner's jo towards hands (center). Finish with overhead harpoon strike.
  9. Otoshi tsuki :: (gyakute) Lateral overhead block (feet remain in hamni). Right hand flattens and slides down jo, harpoon strike.
  10. Otoshi tsuki :: (gyakute) Lateral overhead block, Left hand slides down partner's jo, finish with harpoon strike.
  11. Kaiten Uchiotoshi :: (gyakute)
    Variation #1
    Step off with back foot, bring tip of jo up and block shomen downwards, flip jo back and tsuki.
    Variation #2
    Step back with front foot, slide hands to other end of jo, block shomen downwards, flip jo, tsuki.
